History:
The promoter of the current Madrid Zoo was Antonio Lleó de la Viña, who built the zoo's facilities in the Casa de Campo. The initial project for the Madrid Zoo was carried out by the Catalan architect Jordi Mir Valls, winner of the competition held for this purpose. The park was inaugurated in 1972 under the Franco government, which made the official inauguration.
Fifteen years later, in 1987, the dolphinarium was built. It was inaugurated with seven bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). The Mysterious Nature pavilion was also built where a collection of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates is exhibited. In 2016, the Mysterious Nature pavilion was closed, 30 years after its inauguration, for not complying with the new regulations for public spaces of the Madrid City Council.
In 1995 the Aquarium was built in the southwestern part of the enclosure, in the shape of a glass pyramid, measuring 3000 m².
In 1997, flight exhibitions of raptors and exotic birds began in an area near the dolphinarium. That same year the then owners (Banco Bilbao Vizcaya, the heirs of Lleó de la Viña and the Patriber company) sold the business to the Madrid Amusement Park (Parques Reunidos).
In 2002, Queen Sofia and the then mayor of Madrid, José María Álvarez del Manzano, inaugurated the environmental education classrooms at the Zoo Aquarium.
In 2003, the facility was remodeled for sea lions (Zalophus californianus) and penguins (Spheniscus demersus).
In 2006 the Southeast Asian primate complex (orangutans and Lar's gibbons (Hylobates lar)) was built.
Since September 2007 the zoo has had a new complex with giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca). The Zoo first time got a pair of Pandas 1978, they produced a cub in 1982. The first giant panda to be born in Europe
